Chihuahua Savage dominate for first Major Arena Soccer League Women title
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Chihuahua Savage scored less than a minute into the first quarter, and never let up from there to win the inaugural Major Arena Soccer League Women championship over Detroit City FC, 16-3..
Chihuahua, -- who scored 150 goals in the regular season, which was 57 more than Detroit who was the second highest scoring team in the league -- led 6-0 at the end of the first, and 11-1 at the break.
The title for the women's side continues a run of dominance in the indoor game in North America. The Savage are the reigning champions in the Major Arena Soccer League, and their MASL 2 team won that league's title two seasons ago, and are in the playoffs again in 2024-25.
Detroit actually came into the game as the only team not to have lost this season. After completing a 10-0 regular season, they advanced Saturday with am 11-5 win over the Iowa Demon Hawks. Chihuahua went 9-1 in the regular season, losing only to Dallas RPFC by a 2-1 score. They defeated RPFC in Saturday's other semi-final, 6-3, to advance.
Valerie Macias, a first team All MASL W honoree who led the league in assists this year and was fourth overall in points, had four goals and three assists. Samara Gomez scored three and teammates Silvia Elicerio -- who led the league in goals and points during the regular season -- and Andrea Gallegos each scored twice. She was named league MVP during the media luncheon held Friday in Des Moines.
Other goal getters for Chihuahua included Denisse Valdez, Lourdes Valle, Martha Saenz and Daniela VIdal. Alondra Tinajero got the win in goal. Goal scorers for Detroit were Kayla Addison, Hannah Crum and Amanda Britain.
"There's no question that Chihuahua is a most worth champion. They were dominant today and pretty much all season so other teams know the level they have to shoot at for next season," Commissioner Chris Economides said. " And many thanks to Des Moines and the Iowa Demon Hawks. They put on a great show, the community supported the event, and on behalf of myself, the teams here, and the league as a whole, we can't thank them enough for all they did."
